Cilgerran and Mwnt – October 2023
These images were taken while based at Cie Newydd (New Quay) in October 2023 and form part of the Anxious Journeys series influenced by the Metaphysical art of the Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978).
About Cilgerran Castle
The first castle at Cilgerran was probably build around 1108(?) by Gerald de Windsor. The stone castle, which occupies the site today, was build by William Marshal, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, in 1223.
It’s likely that the castle was ‘allowed to go to ruin’ by about 1387 and the castle is now in the hands of the National Trust.
About Mwnt
Mwnt is a small seaside settlement north of the town of Cardigan. Named after the prominent hill (Foel y Mwnt), the settlement includes a popular beach and the Church of the Holy Cross – a medieval sailor’s chapel of ease.
Mwnt is owned by the National Trust.
