Clun and Clun Castle

The ruined medieval castle overlooks the small town of Clun in southwest Shropshire. Established after the Norman conquest, the castle had been largely abandoned by the 16th century.

Originally, a 7th century Anglo-Saxon settlement, the village sized town of Clun is named after the river Clun (Colunwy in Welsh) which runs through the centre of the town and is crossed by a 14th century pack horse bridge.

Clun is mentioned in A E Housman’s poem In ‘Valleys of Springs and Rivers’

Clunton and Clunbury,
Clungunford and Clun,
Are the quietest places
Under the sun.
A E Housman
