“United We Conquer” the Commando Memorial
Just outside of Fort William at a place called Lochaber stands a bronze sculpture of three Commandos.
The Commando Memorial, as it is known, was designed by sculptor Scott Sutherland in 1951 and depicts three soldiers in characteristic commando uniform. Carrying the inscriptions “United We Conquer” and “In memory of the officers and men of the commandos who died in the Second World War 1939–1945. This country was their training ground.”
The memorial overlooks the training areas of the Commando Training Depot established in 1942 at Achnacarry Castle.
The soldier at the front is thought to depict Commando Jack Lewington. One of the other two soldiers is Frank Nicholls (my Uncle Frank – the one on the left we think) the other is regimental sergeant major Sidney Hewlett.
