Cronkhill House: Attingham
Almost certainly inspired by Claude Lorrain’s painting “Landscape near Rome with a View of the Ponte Molle” Michael Mansbridge
Described as ‘the earliest Italianate villa in England’, Cronkhill was designed in 1805 by the architect John Nash.
Cronkhill was built for Francis Walford, a friend of the 2nd Lord Berwick, from Attingham Park. Walford lived in the house until falling out with Lord Berwick in 1828. After this time, it was occupied by members of the Berwick family until both Cronkhill and Attingham Park were transferred to the National Trust in 1947,
