Harlech: New Year 2022
A mile or so north of Llanfair is the small town of Harlech.
None of Edward I’s mighty coastal fortresses has a more spectacular setting
Harlech dominates the A496 costal road with its imposing castle which was built by Edward I during his conquest of Wales (1282 to 1289) .
Harlech is also home to Coleg Harlech and the Theatr Ardudwy which closed in 2017. Theatre Ardudwy is described as:
Modernist theatre building constructed of shuttered concrete and based on a series of rotundas. Houses main auditorium seating 266. Occupies position low down on the coastal hills of Harlech commanding extensive sea views. From the National Monuments Record of Wales (NMRW)
The brutalist building designed by Gerald Latter for Colwyn Foulkes & Partners was opened in 1973 as Theatr Ardudwy and then subsequently Theatr Harlech. Closed alongside the college in 2017, the site is now considered to be ‘a building at risk’.
