Llangrannog and St Carantoc: October 2023
These images were taken while based at Cie Newydd (New Quay) in October 2023 and form part of the Anxious Journeys series influenced by the Metaphysical art of the Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978).
About Llangannog
Llangrannog is a village a few miles southwest of New Quay.
According to legend, the large stack of Ordovician rock on Llangrannog beach, called Carreg Bica, is the tooth of the giant Bica who was forced to spit it out when suffering from toothache!
Dylan Thomas also visited Llangrannog when he lived in New Quay (1944–45). He visited the Ship Inn with Tommy Herbert, the Aberaeron vet, and Ira Jones, a World War One fighter ace.
Above the village is a statue of Saint Carantoc a 6th-century Welsh saint credited with founding Llangrannog.
