Anxious Journeys is an emerging series of photographs influenced by the Metaphysical art of the Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978) and based on journeys I have made…
These images were taken on a visit to Mount Vesuvius during a stay in the small Italian village of Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi in 2019.
Mount Vesuvius
Mount Vesuvius is an active volcano on Gulf of Naples that sits on the plain of Campania in southern Italy about 9km from Naples.
The somma-stratovolcano has erupted many times and, in AD 79, buried the Roman town of Pomepii (which would be rediscovered – almost perfectly preserved – many hundreds of years later). The most recent eruption was between 1913–1944 – and lasted for more than 30 years.
