These images form part of the Lost Content series and were taken in 2025. The Lost Content is a semi-autobiographical project exploring the cultural and literary landscape of Shropshire. 

About Shrewsbury

The beginnings of a series of pictures from Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury, or ‘Salop’, or just ‘Town’, is the county town of Shropshire with a population of nearly 77,000 people.

Sitting in a loop of the River Severn, the town, like Ludlow, retains much of its original Medieval character today.

Main image: 16 High Street, Shrewsbury. Now a Costa coffee shop, The 20th Century facade was replaced and a more authentic facade was reinstated to be in keeping with the buddings Medieval origins.

 New gables were carved with illustrations reflecting contemporary events such as Paul Gascoigne in the World Cup, Poll Tax and the power struggle between Margaret Thatcher and Lord Heseltine. 

(All images have been made with a vintage 58mm Helios 44-2 f2 lens – coincidentally, first released around the year I was born – they were all shot ‘wide open’ at an aperture of f2 and, unusually for me, in colour)
