At 11am on 23/10/2018, in Ludlow’s Castle Gardens, a descendent of Mayor Edward Sheldon planted an oak tree kindly donated by Ludlow’s twin town, La Ferté-Macé.
The tree replaces the original Armistice tree which Mayor Sheldon planted in 1919 to commemorate the peace treaty that had ended the Great War in 1918.
Also present was the grandson of William Lloyd (Ludlow’s last lamplighter), who appeared alongside Mayor Sheldon – holding the tree – in the official photograph of the 1919 ceremony.
The ceremonial picture shows: (L-R) Marj Sheldon (front), Elizabeth Roberts, Paul Sheldon, Donald Sheldon and Harvey Griffiths (grandson of William Lloyd).
The images all form part of a broader piece of work – The Unreturning – which includes pictures from Ypres on 11/11/11, the D-Day 60, D-Day 70 and D-Day 75 commemorations and other Remembrance parades.
Each one whom Life exiled I named and called.
