Anxious Journeys is a series of travel or journey based photography projects influenced by the Metaphysical art of the Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978).
London: City is a themed selection of photographs from this series based on trips to London. Sometimes these are individual images, sometimes they are mini-projects in their own right.
The Wapping Hydraulic Power Station
The Wapping Hydraulic Power Station was built in 1890 to harness water from the river Thames in order to provided hydraulic power to the surrounding docks and central London, including providing power to raise the Tower Bridge.
At the height of its operations in the 1930s – before the widescale adoption of electricity – the plant pumped 33 million gallons of water a week through a network of 186 miles of cast iron underground pipes around the city. The plant closed in 1977 and has subsequently been converted to an art gallery and event space.
These pictures were taken during a rare public opening for the ‘Focus Kazakhstan: Post-nomadic Mind’.
Post-nomadism refers to the effort of contemporary Kazakhstani artists to re-imagine nomadism and construct a new post-Soviet identity.
