Our Lady Star of the Sea
The Catholic Church of Our Lady Star of the Sea, Amlwch, was designed by the Italian architect Giuseppe Rinvolucri who came to Wales after the First World War. Rinvolucri married a Welshwoman and settled in Conwy – where he designed and built unusual churches, including Abergele and St Peter’s Catholic Church in Ludlow.
Our Lady Star of the Sea was started in 1932 and consecrated in 1937.
As an homage to Amlwch’s maritime history and proximity to the sea, Rinvolucri designed the church to reflect the shape of an upturned hull of a ship, complete with porthole-like windows near the bottom.
The church is dedicated to Our Lady St. Mary and the 7th century Welsh saint St. Winefride.
